If you are new to role-playing or just want to touch up on your basics, you're in the right place. Here are some definitions:
Role-Playing: The portrayal of fictional characters, animal and/or human, by participants in order to tell a story. The characters have their own personalities, motivations, and backgrounds that allow them to interact with others in different ways. Players decide the outcome of situations based on how their characers would react - there is really no right or wrong as long as the rules are followed.
Power-Playing: Controlling another player's character without their consent. This is not allowed in RPing unless the other participant consents. Here is an example:
Mary (my character) lunged at Bob (another person's character) and pinned him down. He struggled as hard as he could but eventually gave up, allowing her to win the fight.
Here is how this scene could be played out without PP:
Mary lunged at Bob and pinned him down - she hoped her strength would be enough to keep him there, which would allow her to win the fight, but she didn't know.
This way, Bob's player can either make Bob strong enough to escape or not. The point is that they get to decide.
God-Moding: This is similar to power-playing in that the other person does not get to decide the fate of their character. Basically, it is when you play the role of God. Here is an example:
Right when Bob was about to lunge at Mary, huge gust of wind came and blew him away, giving Mary the opportunity to escape.
This is also not allowed in RPing for the same reason as PP.
